In a significant step towards bolstering regional integration and advancing the enlargement of the European Union, leaders from the EU and six Western Balkan countries convened in Tivat, Montenegro. This summit, bringing together officials from Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, North Macedonia, Kosovo, and Serbia, was held under the overarching aim of enhancing prosperity, stability, and cooperation with the EU.
The discussions were comprehensive, focusing on a variety of critical issues such as economic reforms, security cooperation, and defense coordination. Additionally, there was a strong emphasis on strategies to enhance resilience against cyber threats. EU officials reiterated that the enlargement of the union remains a strategic priority, urging candidate countries to persist in implementing necessary reforms for membership.
A significant part of the summit was dedicated to reviewing the progress of the EU’s growth plan for the Western Balkans, an initiative designed to stimulate economic development and reinforce regional connections with the EU bloc. Currently, Montenegro and Albania are seen as the frontrunners in the candidacy for EU membership, whereas other countries in the region are grappling with political and institutional challenges that complicate their accession processes.
Financial support and additional measures intended to expedite the accession process for qualifying countries were also topics of discussion among European leaders. Despite the focus on cooperation, regional tensions, particularly between Serbia and Montenegro due to recent security disputes, remained a critical point of concern. However, officials underscored the necessity of dialogue and collaboration as the Western Balkans move closer to European integration.
