The humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza has prompted Ireland to withdraw from the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest. This decision reflects the stance of its public broadcaster, RTÉ, which has expressed deep concern regarding the ongoing conflict and the significant loss of civilian lives in the region.
RTÉ emphasized that its position on not participating in the Eurovision remains firm, as the broadcaster finds it unjustifiable to engage in the event amidst the current turmoil in Gaza. Furthermore, RTÉ highlighted issues related to the restricted access for international journalists attempting to report on the ground in the area.
The European Broadcasting Union (EBU), responsible for organizing Eurovision, has acknowledged Ireland’s decision. The EBU remains hopeful that Ireland might rejoin the competition in the future, indicating ongoing communication with RTÉ.
Ireland’s decision to opt-out of the 2027 contest is not isolated. The country previously boycotted the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest, alongside the Netherlands, Spain, Iceland, and Slovenia, following the inclusion of Israel by the EBU. The Netherlands has already signaled its intent not to participate in 2027, though there is a possibility that another broadcaster might represent the nation. Meanwhile, Spain, Iceland, and Slovenia have yet to announce their official stance regarding the upcoming event.
The 2027 Eurovision Song Contest is scheduled to take place in Burgas, Bulgaria, in May. The absence of these countries marks a significant shift in participation dynamics, underscoring the influence of global geopolitical issues on international cultural events.
