Trump’s Iran War Draws In Gulf States, UK, and UN as Region Erupts

by admin477351

What began as a US-Israeli military campaign against Iran has rapidly expanded into a broader regional confrontation, drawing in Gulf states, the United Kingdom, and United Nations peacekeeping forces as the conflict enters its seventh day. President Donald Trump has demanded Iran’s unconditional surrender, but the war is touching an ever-widening circle of nations and institutions.
The military operations at the core of the conflict have been extraordinary in scale. US B-2 stealth bombers have struck Iran’s underground missile infrastructure with dozens of 2,000-pound penetrating munitions. A major Iranian naval vessel has been hit and possibly sunk. Israel has issued mass evacuation orders in Lebanon, displacing over one million people, and struck Hezbollah’s command and logistics infrastructure across Beirut. The defense secretary has promised a dramatic surge in US firepower.
Iran’s retaliatory campaign has pulled in its neighbors. Missiles and drones were launched at US military bases in Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain. Qatar and Saudi Arabia confirmed intercepting attacks aimed at US facilities on their territory. In Bahrain, strikes hit hotels and a residential building. In Kuwait, where six American soldiers were killed earlier in the week, fresh missile and drone attacks crossed the airspace. The UK, responding to requests from allies, deployed additional RAF Typhoon fighters to Qatar.
The UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon was drawn into the conflict when the Ghanaian battalion’s headquarters was struck by missile fire, critically wounding two soldiers and destroying the officers’ mess. Neither Unifil nor the Ghanaian military identified the attacker. France condemned the strike as unacceptable. Ireland’s taoiseach called it reckless. The UN called for an investigation. Irish soldiers reportedly helped evacuate the wounded Ghanaians.
The conflict’s expanding footprint has alarmed the international community. The UN human rights chief has called for urgent steps to contain what he described as a spreading blaze. European governments have expressed deep concern. China and Russia have called for restraint. Arab states are caught between the American military presence on their soil and the Iranian retaliation it has invited. And Trump, surveying all of this, has responded with a single message: Iran must surrender, unconditionally, or face the consequences.
