In the wake of the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack, Gadi Eisenkot, the head of the Yashar party and a prominent contender in Israel’s political arena, has dismissed the viability of a two-state solution. Eisenkot believes the attack has rendered continued advocacy for such a solution impractical. Meanwhile, he has voiced opposition to the government’s E1 settlement initiative in the West Bank, warning that it could harm Israel’s global reputation. This plan involves expanding settlements between Jerusalem and Ma’ale Adumim, a move that could obstruct territorial continuity among major Palestinian communities.
The Israeli government recently initiated a tender for over 1,000 housing units in the E1 area, a decision that has sparked significant international backlash. The European Union, among other international bodies, is reportedly considering actions against Israel should the construction proceed. Eisenkot has expressed concern that the E1 project could further isolate Israel on the world stage.
Adding to his criticism, Eisenkot has taken aim at Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, blaming them for the increase in settler violence in the West Bank. According to Eisenkot, their policies have not only undermined the Israel Defense Forces’ authority in the region but have also jeopardized Israel’s international legitimacy and national interests.
In response to Eisenkot’s critique, Finance Minister Smotrich defended the E1 construction plans. He contends that the development is crucial to preventing the establishment of a Palestinian state near Jerusalem, aligning with his stance on securing Israel’s interests in the region.
