Spotify is rolling out new initiatives to better identify artists created by artificial intelligence and limit their prominence on the platform. Starting in September, artist profiles and track listings that feature AI-generated identities will be marked with an “AI persona” label. This step is designed to help users easily discern between real musicians and those with artificial identities, while safeguarding authentic artists from losing visibility against AI-generated content.
By default, AI personas will be excluded from Spotify’s personalized recommendations, as part of the company’s effort to maintain a clear distinction between genuine performers and those created through AI. Artists will have the option to disclose if their personas are AI-generated. Additionally, Spotify plans to employ human reviewers alongside AI-driven tools to detect any undisclosed AI personas.
The platform’s decision comes amid a surge in AI-generated music. Spotify has previously reported the removal of 75 million spam tracks over a 12-month period, highlighting the challenge posed by the influx of artificial and low-quality content into music services.
With the rise of generative AI in the music industry, Spotify emphasizes that transparency is becoming increasingly vital. Listeners are showing a growing interest in understanding whether the creators behind the music they enjoy are human or AI-generated. The platform’s new measures aim to address these concerns by providing clearer information about the nature of the artists featured on its service.
