Kazakhstan is urging a revitalization of global diplomatic efforts to tackle ongoing conflicts and foster international cooperation, as highlighted by Foreign Minister Mukhtar Tileuberdi during his address to the United Nations General Assembly. Tileuberdi warned of a growing deficit in global trust, emphasizing the importance of diplomacy and negotiations in resolving issues such as the war in Ukraine.
Expressing concern over recent drone attacks on Kazakh oil export infrastructure and commercial vessels in the Black Sea, Tileuberdi cautioned that these incidents pose risks to navigation, international trade, and energy supplies. He called on the international community to address these threats through concerted diplomatic efforts.
Tileuberdi also reiterated Kazakhstan’s support for a two-state solution in the Middle East, advocating for an independent Palestinian state coexisting peacefully with Israel. Kazakhstan expressed its willingness to contribute to stabilizing Gaza through support for civilian reconstruction, food security, and digital government services. Additionally, Tileuberdi announced Kazakhstan’s intention to join the Abraham Accords to further peace efforts in the region.
Turning attention to Afghanistan, Tileuberdi emphasized the country’s stability as crucial to the security and development of Central Asia. He advocated for coordinated international engagement through the United Nations, suggesting that humanitarian aid should be paired with strategies to address poverty and economic dependence.
On the issue of nuclear disarmament, Kazakhstan renewed its call for progress and offered to host high-level discussions among nuclear-armed nations. Tileuberdi underscored Kazakhstan’s experience in closing the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site and relinquishing its nuclear arsenal post-independence. He urged nuclear-armed states to continue disarmament efforts despite existing disagreements, emphasizing the need for respect for international law and commitments.
Tileuberdi also highlighted Kazakhstan’s support for greater representation of Asia, Africa, Latin America, developing countries, and middle powers in the UN Security Council. During the assembly, he held discussions with UN officials and foreign ministers on topics such as UN reform, regional connectivity, energy, investment, and transport, including cooperation on the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route and sustainable development in Central Asia and Afghanistan.
